What is the Triple Aim?

Originally developed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), the Triple Aim is a framework that describes an approach to optimizing health system performance.

Adopted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), the goals of the Triple Aim are defined as:

  • Improving the patient experience of care (including quality and satisfaction)
  • Improving the health of populations
  • Reducing the per capita cost of healthcare
